The second highest mountain on Earth, K2 is located in the Karakoram segment of the Himalayan Range. Standing at 28,251 feet, K2 takes second place only to Mount Everest more than 1,500 miles away. The summit of K2 lies on the border of China and Pakistan. On the east side, is Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang (formerly Chinese Turkestan); on the west side, it is the Northern Areas of Pakistan. The local Balti people, who live on the Pakistan side, call K2 Chogori meaning “Mother Mountain” in their Tibetan dialect. The Chinese authorities officially refer to K2 as Qogir or Qiaogeli Feng. K2 is sometimes referred to as Mount Godwin-Austen because the mountain was first surveyed in 1856 by a European survey team headed by Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen. T.G. Montgomery was the member of the team who designated it K2 for the second peak in the Karakoram Range. The other peaks were originally named K2, K3, K4 and K5, but were eventually renamed Masherbraum, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II and Gasherbrum I respectively. These peaks represent some of the world’s highest summits. The first attempted climb of K2 was in 1902, but it was eventually summitted in 1954 by an Italian team where Lino Lacedelli and Archille Campagnoni reached the top. Snow Lion offers treks to both the Chinese and Pakistani base camps of K2. Both of these routes offer compelling and challenging mountain treks, ascending into the world's premier majestic ethereal alpine realm.
