Astride the continuum from archaic to modern, we explore the imposing monuments of Imperial China – the Forbidden City and Ming Tombs of Beijing, and the terra-cotta warriors of Xi’an – while keeping pace “on the town” with today’s urbanites in first-class hotels and restaurants, at the opera and traditional acrobatic performances. We digress from the bustling eastern section of the country and fly to Lhasa, the spiritual nexus of Tibet. A three-day cruise through the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River enables us to experience a landscape soon to be submerged behind the world’s largest dam. Two days to sample Shanghai and Suzhou, a city renowned for its traditional gardens and silk production, wrap up this far-flung adventure across China..
