In 1928, the great adventurer Joseph Rock became the first westerner to explore the kingdom of Muli. Never incorporated into the greater Tibetan kingdom centered in Lhasa, Muli is no less Tibetan in language, culture and spiritual practices. After Rock was driven out by bandits, his "Shangri-la" was all but forgotten. Until recently, the only pictures and stories of Muli to be found were in National Geographic issues from the 1920s. Present-day Muli is situated in the Chinese province of Szechwan, on the border with Yunnan and Tibet. A stunning region of cultural and biological diversity, Muli was recently designated a national conservation area by The Nature Conservancy. As we explore the mountains, lakes, and gorges in the heart of Joseph Rock country, we encounter the local people who still practice thousand-year-old methods of farming and fishing. Only a decade ago, locals remembered the flamboyant American Joseph Rock. Snow Lion has operated various reconnaissance routes into Muli inorder to perfect the perfect trip into this region on the borderlands between Sichuan and Yunnan.
