K2, the second-highest mountain in the world at over 28,000 feet, lies further off the beaten path and is even more difficult to climb than Mount Everest. We'll take the east approach to its base camp in the Chinese Karakoram through one of the world's last unexplored valleys of the Shaksgam River. The only people to enter this region are a small number of mountaineers, their hearts and minds set on the elusive summit. Even the locals tend not to venture far into this unknown territory bordering the Taklamakan desert (Uyghur for “if you go in, you won't come out”). During this epic expedition we’ll trek through remote villages, over high passes, across glaciers, and ford rivers on the backs of our camels. We finally arrive amidst the grandeur of K2 and the many other imposing pinnacles that surround it.
