Sanctuary: a sacred place or a place of refuge. This definition must have been familiar to those who named this valley the “Annapurna Sanctuary.” Accessible only through a narrow river canyon and surrounded by nine peaks of over 21,000 feet, it’s a magical enclosure in the heart of the Annapurna Himalaya. The three-by-five mile Sanctuary offers us astounding views of the nearby surrounding peaks: ecosystems, such as those of the Gurkha, including rice fields, rhododendron and mountain passes with fantastic views. Remarkably, Nepal is largely a country motor roads. Access to its interior follows foot trails and trade routes. As we walk, we path with the native people and their pack adapting to the rhythm of their lifestyle.
