Glaciated peaks of the Altai soar skyward, anchored by the lush meadows and pristine lakes of Mongolia's far western wilderness. If hiking within a wild and spectacular mountain range is your idea of the perfect summer vacation, then you'll want to join us for this one-time departure in 2006. We'll hike up alpine valleys, stopping to view ancient burial sites and rock paintings. Our trekking crew sets camp for us nightly, perhaps alongside the settlements of Kazakh nomads where we will be invited to taste their homemade cheese and liquor distilled from mare's milk. On our seventh day of hiking, we arrive at Potanin Glacier, 12.5 miles in length. From here, we aspire to ascend Khuiten Peak, Mongolia's highest summit at 14,350 feet. We'll toast to the camaraderie and memories of this unforgettable adventure during a farewell dinner and folklore performance on our final night in Ulaanbaatar.
