- 5 Days
- Cultural Touring
Your journey to North Korea begins with a “briefing” in Beijing’s Mao-inspired Red Capital Club nestled deep inside a historic hutong. Then it’s off to isolated Pyongyang––eerie yet appealing like East Berlin of the 1980’s––where you’ll witness North Korea’s most exuberant festival alongside 150,000 spectators in May Day Stadium. Two full days of touring reveal the fascinating dichotomy between massive government monuments (Kamsusan Palace, Juche Tower and the Grand Monument on Mansu Hill, for example) and stark daily life. We escape Pyongyang for two excursions into the countryside – first to Nampo port on the Bay of Korea, then to the Demilitarized Zone for the unprecedented view from the north. We spend three nights in the French-built Yanggakdo Hotel, rising 40 stories above Pyongyang, before our flight ceremoniously returns us to the relative creature comforts of Beijing.
