An eighth-century Tang emperor gave this mountain province its name, Yunnan, which means “south of the clouds.” From then on, Chinese imperial dynasties thought of Yunnan as the edge of their world, beyond the clouds and south of Szechwan. In the early 20th century, British author and botanist Frank Kingdon-Ward dubbed this the "Land of Great Corrugations" becuase three major river drainages of the Salween, Mekong and Yangtze flow through it's western boarder-lands Today, Yunnan’s attractions include lovely cities, unspoiled countryside, and a population that represents the greatest cultural diversity in all of China, including Tibetans, Yi, Naxi and Bai. Our journey includes Kunming’s Stone Forest and the precipitous Tiger Leaping Gorge. We’ll visit colorful pagodas, temples and villages of humble log cabins. Step back in time to enjoy Yunnan’s pastoral tranquility.
