The Mongols are the finest horsemen in the world. Long before Genghis Khan led raids to Europe, the Mongols were nomadic herders on horseback. This tradition is celebrated today throughout the short Mongolian summer with horse festivals, wild affairs full of color teeming with the spirit of the great Mongol warriors. The most spectacular of these festivals is Naadam, a countrywide competition testing the three "manly" sports: horsemanship, archery and wrestling. We spend several nights in a yurt or ger, sampling traditional dishes and talking with local camel breeders. Before the festival we explore the wide-open landscape of plains, lakes and hills in this sublime country.
